Appalachian Power wants to build two major power lines and a new substation to serve the Roanoke Valley.
The subsidiary of American Electric Power said Thursday it will soon announce details of the upgrades, estimated to cost $62 million.
APCO said the improvements are needed to prevent overloads, based on forecasts and peak demand during the hottest days last summer.
The company says bulk electricity comes into the Roanoke Valley now at two points, the Cloverdale Substation and the Matt Funk Substation near Salem.
Appalachian Power will outline proposed corridors for the transmission lines and present them for comment before determining a preferred line route.
The projects must be approved by the State Corporation Commission.
