Georgia Power says it's reached an agreement with Westinghouse Electric and The Shaw Group to design and build two 1,100-megawatt nuclear reactors at its Plant Vogtle in Georgia.

Georgia's largest utility will submit the engineering agreement to the state Public Service Commission by May 1. The company also will need approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

At least three other companies have filed applications with the NRC, including Richmond, Virginia-based Dominion Resources. Dominion wants to add a reactor at its North Anna Power Station in Virginia.

Tuesday, Dominion vice president for nuclear development Eugene Grecheck predicted the utility would be first to receive a new license for a nuclear plant, following a nearly 30-year hiatus.

The NRC expects license applications for as many as 29 reactors at 20 sites nationwide over the next three years.
