Virginia State police say a trooper rescued an Arlington man from a van that caught fire after a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 66.

Police say the crash occurred while Trooper K.J. Brown was performing a traffic stop around noon Wednesday near Route 28.

The Dodge Caravan caught fire and because the doors were jammed, police say Brown broke the window and pulled out the unresponsive driver.

The driver, 72-year-old James Campbell, is in stable condition at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The drivers of the other vehicles involved the crash were taken to the hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening. Brown was treated for minor abrasions to his arm and smoke inhalation and released.

Authorities believe a medical condition caused the crash and charges are pending against Campbell.

Police also are investigating whether the Caravan was involved in a hit-and-run a mile away. No injuries were reported in that crash.
