"America's Most Wanted" observes a milestone this week: the arrest of the 1,000th fugitive targeted by the show since its inception in April 1988.
That arrest just happened to be made in Virginia. Dwight Smith, a New York real estate agent accused of murdering a friend, was taken into custody April 19 after a caller who recognized him on the show's Web site steered authorities to a Richmond address.
Smith is not the first fugitive nabbed in the Richmond area after being profiled by "America's Most Wanted," which John Walsh founded after the abduction and murder of his six-year-old son Adam. In 1989, John List was arrested for the slayings of five family members in New Jersey. He'd been on the lam for 17 years.
List died in prison in March.
