J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College is launching a program to spare students the costs of commuting.
Under the Fuel $mart Fridays pilot, the Richmond school will allow students to drive to campus only one day per week and still earn a full load of credits.
The community college said Tuesday the average student commutes 20 miles daily. Over a 16-week semester, a student could see a potential fuel savings of just over $1,000 by attending classes on Friday only.
President Gary L. Rhodes said 80 percent of the college's students work and are on fixed incomes, so they could use the break on commuting.
