A North Carolina man has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for faking an Army career.
U.S. Attorney Julia Dudley said 43-year-old Randall Moneymaker also was ordered Friday to pay more than $18,000 in restitution for military disability payments he obtained by claiming he was a wounded soldier.
A federal jury in Roanoke convicted the Clayton, North Carolina, resident in March of making false statements and theft of government funds.
Moneymaker claimed he was a decorated Army Ranger with tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Panama and Grenada during more than 20 years of active duty.
Prosecutors say he was in the Army from 1983-85 and was discharged for misconduct. Their evidence showed scars he claimed were from combat resulted from liposuction procedures.
