The U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia is stepping down from the job this month.

Chuck Rosenberg informed President Bush of his intentions in a September 30 letter. Rosenberg has held the job since 2006.

Spokesman Jim Rybicki says Rosenberg's last day will be October 22, but he hasn't announced future plans. An acting U.S. attorney likely will be appointed until a replacement is nominated by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

The U.S. attorney is the chief federal prosecutor for the district, which includes offices in Alexandria, Newport News, Norfolk and Richmond.
