Craig County will replace a Bible education course that had been questioned by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The school board voted this week drop a high school course called "The Bible in History and Literature" after this semester. The course, which is promoted by actor Chuck Norris, has drawn criticism from civil liberties organizations in several states who contend it unconstitutionally promotes particular beliefs.
A schools spokesman said Friday that the course will be replaced in January by one called "The Bible and Its Influence," which is produced by the Bible Literacy Project.
Virginia ACLU Executive Director Kent Willis says the new course is more acceptable to his organization. He says it takes "a broader view of the Bible."
