It's graduation day for Norfolk's "Lost Class of 1959."

Nearly 100 former public school students who did not get diplomas during the crossfire of Virginia's desegregation battle will receive honorary diplomas on Monday.

During Virginia's "Massive Resistance," nearly 10,000 white students were barred from their classes after six public schools closed in September 1959 rather than allow in black students.

While many returned to their classrooms in February 1959, hundreds never did and went on to military service or jobs.

Now in their 60s, the students will be honored at graduation ceremonies at the Chrysler Museum.
