Banks, businesses and individuals are seeking nearly $311 million from the family-owned peanut processor at the center of a nationwide salmonella outbreak.

Among claims filed Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Lynchburg by companies that did business with Peanut Corp. of America was one for $60 million by Kellogg Co.

Kellogg had to recall millions of packages of peanut butter crackers and cookies.

Monday was the deadline for businesses seeking compensation for losses in the outbreak, which led to recall of more than 3,490 products.

A claim by Clif Bar Inc. seeks $27 million.

The deadline for personal injury claims has been extended to October 31. About 700 were sickened by salmonella, and the outbreak has been linked to at least nine deaths.
