Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she is resigning from office.

She didn't say why she decided to step down, but the surprise announcement stirred speculation that she would focus on a bid for the 2012 Republican nomination for president.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate made the announcement from her home in suburban Wasilla on Friday morning. She said she would step down July 26.

Spokesman Dave Murrow says Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the governor's picnic in Fairbanks at the end of the month.

Palin was first elected in 2006 on a populist platform. But her popularity has waned as she waged in partisan politics following her return from the presidential campaign.

Before the negative, misleading propaganda about Sarah Palin begins spreading just as it did this past November, I would like to assure everyone of one thing: Governor Palin is a very smart woman. Her move to step down as the Chief Executive of Alaska is a GREAT one, and based on the well-prepared speech she gave to the press Friday, just before Independence Day, I am certain that BIGGER & BETTER things are in her future! I encourage everyone to please watch or read the ENTIRE speech that Mrs. Palin gave. Although I was at first shocked and confused upon hearing the news of her resignation, I am now impressed, hopeful, and I am ready for what is to come in Sarah Palin’s future. I believe she does tackle “the ol’ politics as usual”, and she encourages me to be involved in issues of local, state, and federal government. July 7th marks my 18th birthday, giving me the long awaited right to vote. I hope that the first vote I cast in a Presidential election will be for Republican Sarah Palin
