Police in Newport News say a pit bull and its owner attacked an officer who was responding to a domestic disturbance.

The officer, whose name was not released, was being treated Sunday for bites to his left hand and forearm.

Police spokesman Harold O. Eley says the officer shot and injured the dog and pepper sprayed the man.

Forty-six-year-old Willie James Sims was being held on charges of assaulting a police officer, disorderly conduct while intoxicated, and assault and battery on a family member, among others.

It was not immediately clear whether he had secured an attorney.

Eley said animal control was caring for the dog.

Police also have launched an internal investigation, which is standard procedure any time a service weapon is discharged.
