The stock market has ended a fractious day narrowly mixed and suffered its fourth straight losing week.
Stocks fell sharply for much of Friday's trading on another series of troubling economic signals. The market pulled off its lows in the last hour as the dollar came off its highs.
The erratic trading followed signs that several weak European governments will have trouble getting their massive deficits under control. The Labor Department, meanwhile, offered only scant hope of improvement in the jobs market in its closely watched monthly report.
The Dow Jones Industrials, down nearly 170 in the afternoon, closed up ten, or 0.1 percent, at 10,012. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose three, or 0.3 percent, to 1,066. The Nasdaq composite index rose 15, or 0.7 percent, to 2,141.
But losing stocks were ahead of gainers on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.56 billion shares.
