Wire Strippers Zapped

An accident at the Radford Foundry appears to have been caused by two men trying to steal copper.

Police say the two men, both from Radford, were badly burned Thursday morning when they cut into an active wire with a hacksaw.

Both were critically injured.

Radford police identified the men as 46-year-old Stephen Edward Bakaitis and 24-year-old Christopher Goad. They say one of the men told officers that they planned to steal copper wire from the foundry, which closed in 2004.

Authorities said the rescue was delayed because they had to cut power to the building before letting rescue workers go inside.
