CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Fraternities at the University of Virginia have complied with the school's order to end their pledge period for new members early.

The university gave fraternities until 6 p.m. Sunday to complete pledging new members. The directive followed reports of inappropriate behavior.

Dean of Students Allen W. Groves tells The Daily Progress that all but two fraternities initiated their pledges by the deadline.

One fraternity is treating pledges as full members. But the ceremony at the fraternity's national headquarters won't be held until April 21.

Grove says the other fraternity uses a "rolling recruitment" and is waiting to initiate pledges who started the process later. That fraternity was granted an exception.

He says most of the fraternities understand why university officials took the action.
