Pipes often freeze in frigid temperatures similar to the ones felt around the Valley Sunday and Monday.
The owner of Lee's Heating and Cooling, Alan Mayz, says pipes start to have trouble this time of year, especially in older homes.
He says the best thing to do it to try and stop cold air from hitting the pipe if at all possible. He says there are several ways this can be accomplished.
"You can wrap the pipes in insulation, foam or fiberglass insulation," says Mayz. "There are two different types. Stop the wind. If there are cracks, seal the cracks."
Mayz also says the old idea about leaving the water running at night is a myth. Instead of preventing frozen pipes, it can often cause water back-ups, which could mean expensive repairs to your home's plumbing system.
