The Virginia Department of Transportation in Staunton is making preparations for the winter season.

Officials held a press conference Monday to discuss some of the new things they are working on to keep the roadways safe this winter.

One new addition to their efforts is the use of a salt brine anti-icing solution. VDOT plans on using this solution 12 to 48 hours before an expected winter storm to help combat icy roads.

Verona Residency Administrator Tim Fitzgerald says it has plenty of benefits.

He says, "Hopefully it will be a good thing for us. We look for it to be cost-efficient for us, and also save us some time on these roadways."

VDOT officials say they will perform anti-icing operations on at least 151 miles of road in Augusta County out of the Fishersville area headquarters.
