Black Ice Blamed for W.V. Crashes

Black ice is being blamed for more than 70 accidents that closed roads and snarled traffic across Kanawha County.

Metro 911 says 73 accidents were reported between 6 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Monday, including 34 with injuries.

One accident involved a Charleston police cruiser that struck a vehicle and flipped onto its top on Greenbrier Street. Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster says Cpl. Nick Null may have suffered a broken wrist or arm in the accident.

Interstate 77 was temporarily shut down near Sissonville following multiple accidents. Several wrecks also were reported on Interstates 64 and 79.

National Weather Service meteorologist Alan Rezek says black ice occurs when water freezes on a road.
