The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has been working on emergency plans for the state. As part of those preparations, several new emergency shelters have been chosen, including the Convocation Center at James Madison University.
Don Egle, JMU spokesman, says the Convocation Center doesn't have to undergo too many changes. The major addition will be an outside generator, which requires some electrical work.
"The changes are actually very minor to the convocation center. It's just adding a generator is primarily the work that's being done," says Egle.
Lights were out all day Monday at the center, with only emergency lights illuminated by a small generator. A crew from Broadway Electrical Inc. was working on the outside generator all day and says that electricity should be restored Tuesday.
Egle says that the project should be completed in a couple of days and it's good to prepare now.
"Most folks would agree that the time to identify those locations is not in the middle of an emergency but in advance of one," says Egle.
