If you're tempted to start planting, make sure the crops can handle frost. The last frost date for the Shenandoah Valley is May 10.

Cold crop vegetables, such as cabbage, lettuce, cauliflower and broccoli can be planted now.

Lynne Hess, Owner of Hess Greenhouse says that geraniums, impatiens, zinnias and other warm season crops do not fair well when overnight lows dip below 40 degrees.

If you happened to plant too early, make sure to protect your plants on cold nights.

Hess says, "The best way to protect it is to put a sheet over it or burlap or a blanket. You don't want to use a piece of plastic because, if we do have a frost, the condensation that forms underneath the plastic, on the inner side, will actually frost and burn the plant."

Hess says a frost can occur even when the temperature is as warm as 37 degrees.
