Summer is the peak season for one of the nation's deadliest weather phenomena: lightning.

The National Weather Service wants people to know the dangers of lighting. Saturday ends a week dedicated to lightning safety.

Officials at the Massanutten Resort monitor lightning closely all year round. Many of the resort's attractions are affected by the weather, ranging from the water park to the ski area, but the golf course is affected the most.

"When you look into your golf bag, you basically have fourteen lightning rods in your golf bag. So when we make our choices to clear the golf course because of lightning, we error on the side of precaution," says golf pro Brett Mowbray.

Once lightning strikes within 12 miles of the course, employees are notified through their computers and cell phones, and they evacuate patrons from the course.
