With more summer-like temperatures rolling in, senior care professionals want to remind you of the dangers many older citizens face in hot summer weather.

Jeanne Russell works with senior citizens in their homes, with their families and in nursing homes. She says seniors need to be particularly careful with high temperatures.

"Heat is a deadly factor for seniors in the summertime. And especially for seniors who are home bound, and maybe don't have relatives or friends checking on them regularly," says Russell.

She says some seniors don't have as big of appetites or don't move around a lot, so they don't drink as enough water.

"We also see a problem with seniors not staying hydrated. That's probably the biggest issue," says Russell.

She says mobile seniors should run their errands in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid heat.

"A lot of people that don't drive very often maybe don't stay on top of their car maintenance, and if you have a break down during the hot days of summer that really makes you vulnerable on a roadside, waiting for help in the heat, probably no water in the car," says Russell.

She adds that fans are great to keep air flowing, and she even has a tip on how to make that air even cooler.

"People actually increase the effectiveness of their fans by using a mister with a fan, because that will dramatically cool you faster," says Russell.
