Windy Days Good for Wind Energy

Days with strong, constant winds like Wednesday can be great for energy generating wind turbines such as those in Mount Storm, West Virginia.

Jonathan Miles, a professor at James Madison University, specializes in wind energy.

"In the simplest terms, the greater the average wind speed on a given day, the greater energy we can produce. Having said that, wind turbines prefer a smooth steady wind or flow of air as opposed to a gusty environment," says Miles.

Miles added that too much wind, or winds that are too strong, can actually cause the turbines to automatically shut down and they'll stop spinning.

"Many wind turbines have a sweet spot for constant wind right around 25 to 35 mph," says Miles.

He went on to say that wind turbines are built specifically for their locations based on the average wind speed and wind direction.
