The Harrisonburg Department of Public Works performed a final inspection on all of its snow removal equipment Friday afternoon.
"We take the week out to go over our trucks and do repairs to them, make sure everything is working right, calibrate the spreaders," says crew supervisor Jeff Martin.
Plow drivers say they've seen snow this early, and it's a good time to make sure everything works because wintry weather can be unpredictable.
"You never know when it will sneak up behind you and it will just come down," says Hector Roman, who has been driving for the city for the past eight years.
He explains that it's important for things to be properly maintained. When the equipment malfunctions in bad weather, it can be dangerous.
"The only thing that usually breaks down is the chains on the rear tires. If one breaks, it's hard to get up hill, so the chains help us with traction," says Roman.
More than 25 vehicles were inspected Friday. Two mechanics as well as multiple supervisors checked lights, reverse signals, plow maneuvering and salt spreaders, among other things.
Even with all of the preparations, Martin explains snow removal takes time.
"Everybody be patient. We'll get to you when we get to you. Our buildings are full of salt and everything, we're ready to go," says Martin.
Drivers say the city of Harrisonburg can be difficult to plow because of the residential areas and traffic. Still, they say it's rewarding.
"It is nice to be able to get the roads clear for everyone to get to work and to their destination," says Roman.
