The National Weather Service predicted a cold start to the work week.

Multiple freeze warnings were in effect for much of West Virginia through 9 a.m. Monday. The warnings also covered parts of Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and Ohio.

The agency called for temperatures falling well below freezing as high pressure builds over the region.

Freezes were expected across much of West Virginia, from Boone and Logan counties in the southern coalfields to Charleston to the Eastern Panhandle.

Freezing also were expected in the Shenandoah Valley and Potomac Highlands in Virginia.
