The National Weather Service says it now has confirmed 16 tornadoes hit Virginia last week.
The tornadoes that struck all areas of the state killed five people, including four in Washington County where the most powerful of the twisters hit. Washington County suffered two tornadoes, including one that was 18 miles long and packed winds of 140 miles per hour.
The weather service also confirmed three tornadoes in Rockingham County, two in Prince William County, and one each in Halifax, Smyth, Prince Edward, Caroline, Augusta, Goochland, Hanover, Shenandoah and Fairfax counties.
Most were much less destructive twisters, carrying winds of up to 100 miles per hour.
No further confirmations are expected.
