HARRISONBURG, Va -- The Harrisonburg Public Works Department is gearing up for winter. On Friday, they hired inspectors to look at the snow plows.

Public Works Street Superintendent Kenny Knight said normally the preparation would come later in fall, but an unexpected snow in early October of last year was a surprise.

The superintendent said that this year, they want to be ready.

"We reviewed the salt spreaders, make sure they're functioning correctly, and that the plows are working," said Knight.

Some people in Harrisonburg thought about what they would do during an early snowfall.

“We just make sure, the night before, that we're ready as far as what we're going to wear for warmth and make sure the sidewalks get cleared," said Angie Rodriguez, a Valley neighbor.

The superintendent said crews will first plow main roads in the city. Then, they will move to neighborhoods. He expects all streets to be cleared within 24 to 36 hours of when it starts to snow.
