HARRISONBURG, Va -- Checking your heating system before the winter season begins is important because if the system leaks or overheats, it can cause a fire. Also, the devices can circulate carbon monoxide in the air, which can kill you. The problem is that carbon monoxide is odorless and tasteless.

Another good reason to check heating systems is to save money in the long-term.

Bill Yount, the owner of Star Cooling and Heating, said people usually start scheduling checkups when it gets cold, but he says when more people are on the list, you might have to wait a little longer than usual.

Yount said you should at check your heating system at least once a year and that it is a matter of safety and efficiency. It is why he recommends pre-season maintenance.

"When it gets really cold in the winter time, you want it to be working and we can pick up on any problems you may have and you know take care of it before it turns cold and gets down into the teens," said Yount.

If you have a furnace or heater, you should get it cleaned or changed once a year. If you have an oil furnace, you should change the oil filter every year before the start of the season. Like the filter in a vaccum, it can get clogged.

You can also save some money because this can make your system more energy efficient.

It usuallys costs about $75 to $100 to get a yearly inspection, but if your heater is not working and you cannot wait until normal business hours, you might have to pay more than that.
