The state Department of Agriculture says the mosquito population has increased in West Virginians because of recent wet weather.
The agency is advising residents to protect themselves and their animals against the blood-sucking insects. Mosquitoes carry the West Nile virus, La Crosse encephalitis and other illnesses.
Department of Agriculture spokesman Buddy Davidson tells the Charleston Daily Mail that livestock is more at risk for West Nile than humans.
Horse owners are advised to have their animals vaccinated for West Nile.
The department says residents should eliminate old tires or other sources of standing water on their property.
