The Page County Sheriff's Office said arson is to blame for the Shipwreck wildfire. The Department of Forestry on the other hand says the cause is still under investigation.

Lee Hensley lives near the Shipwreck wildfire. He said the fire will make hunting easier.

"The fire was here and then it was there,” said Hensley. “It moved to different places because it was windy. It was a good thing, I think, for the forest, it cleaned it out. It ought to help deer hunting when it begins this season, you can see without all the brush."

The fire still created a lot of work for fire crews.

Tim Lansberry is investigating the cause of this fire and he said an arsonist is responsible. He also said it was dangerous for crews to put it out.

"It was not just a dozer operation, dozer helicopter operation,” said Tim Lansberry an investigator with Page County Sheriff's Office. “It was an operation where multiple men and women were using shovels and rakes and what not to create fire lines on very steep, rocky terrain."

He said the fire put hundreds of homes in danger but luckily, no one was hurt.

Neighbors, like Hensley, are looking at the brighter side.

"Well, I wouldn't want to see no one lose their home, but no one did right? So it was great, excellent, it was a good thing," said Hensley.

Lansberry said they do have suspects who may have started this fire but they are still gathering information on the investigation.

If you have any information on this investigation, call Page County's Crime Solvers at 540-743-3272.

There is a $2,000 reward for information about the fire.
