As a seven-year-old in Wheeling, West Virginia, Craig Ackerman opened a magazine to marvel at a photograph at Crater Lake National Park headquarters in Oregon. He recalled someday wanting to go there.

At age 52, he's the new park superintendent.

For the past 17 years, Ackerman has been superintendent at Oregon Caves National Monument.

Before joining the National Parks Service in 1985, Ackerman served as superintendent for state parks in West Virginia.
