West Virginia's state-managed central-fill pharmacy for people without prescription drug coverage is on pace to enroll 10,000 patients in its first year.

The West Virginia Rx program got rolling three months ago. It serves patients who can't afford their medication. The drugs are donated by pharmaceutical companies.

Program Director Barbara Dane attributes the enrollment boom to a Web site allowing doctors to register patients.

Dane expects 50,000 prescriptions, at an estimated value of $7.5 million, to be filled the first year.

Program participants must have no health insurance and provide proof that their income does not exceed 200 percent of the federal poverty level. They must also pay a $30 annual processing fee.
