It may seem far too early to think about flu season, but health experts are gathering in West Virginia to discuss the worst case scenario of an influenza pandemic.
The 2nd Cross-Border Public Health Preparedness Conference at West Virginia University is expected to draw about 200 physicians, nurses, emergency responders, pharmacists and other experts on July 23 to discuss strategies for such an event.
Topics will range from preparedness before a pandemic to details like identifying the people best able to dispense and receive antiviral medicines.
A report last year by the Trust for America's Health found that a flu pandemic could result in the deaths of 17,000 West Virginians, sicken another 500,000 and cost the state's economy $3 billion.
