Planners have given preliminary site approval for a motocross track in Berkeley County that some neighbors say is hurting their property values.
A storage building has been on the 110-acre site near Hedgesville since 2004, but the official plans for Tomahawk MX were only recently filed.
Nancy Dalby, a lawyer for the opponents, said Monday night the plan lacks adequate buffers to protect the environment. She also says the Planning Commission failed to consider whether racing is an appropriate activity for a residential area.
But Planning Director Stefanie Allemong says a federal review determined no wetlands or streams were at risk. An engineer for the track says it obtained all state highway and environmental permits it needed years ago.

Go Tomahawk Mx Park!! Nice place to go riding! Not that loud!!!
Now that the dirt track has been approved or as some say "grandfathered in", its time to sit down and finalize the Berkeley County Residential Noise Ordinance once and for all. The citizens of Berkeley County have been patiently waiting for the Commissioners to supply them with an Ordinance giving our law enforement the tools they need. You can bet that if any of the Commissioners were victimized by excessive noise around their OWN homes, this ordinance would have "teeth" and would have been written correctly YESTERDAY. My prayers go out to the unfortunate homeowners that are victims of the noise pollution produced by this dirt track.
