A federal grand jury in Martinsburg has indicted an osteopathic doctor on charges that he attempted to defraud the Department of Health and Human Services of more than $2.2 million.
Dr. Barton J. Adams faces a 157-count indictment ranging from mail fraud to money laundering, stemming from what U.S. Attorney Sharon Potter calls a scheme to submit false claims to Medicare and Medicaid.
The charges stem from actions that allegedly started in August 2005 and continued for at least two years.
Adams owned and operated the Interventional Pain Management office in Vienna. Contact information for Adams or the clinic could not be immediately located Wednesday.
If convicted, Adams faces up to 20 years in prison and fines. He is free on bond.
