Ohio transportation officials say an 80-year-old Ohio River bridge closed for safety concerns last week will not re-open.
The Ohio Department of Transportation says the Fort Steuben Bridge between eastern Ohio and West Virginia's Northern Panhandle will remain closed until its scheduled demolition this fall.
A crew doing routine maintenance noticed a slight dip in the floor of the towering suspension bridge on January 8. ODOT deputy district director Dick Bible said in a statement Thursday that a subsequent inspection found major deterioration, leading officials to decide the 1929 bridge should not carry traffic again.
Motorists have been detoured onto the neighboring U.S. 22 Veterans Memorial Bridge at Steubenville, built in 1990 to replace the Fort Steuben.
