A federal agriculture census shows that the family farm is making a comeback in West Virginia.

In fact, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says West Virginia has the highest percentage of family-owned farms in the nation.

According to the department's census, the number of family farms in the state grew by 2,626 between 2002 and 2007 to 22,488.

The increase follows a rise in the overall number of farms in West Virginia.

During the census period, the total number of farms grew by 2,806 to 23,618.

But, the size of those farms decreased from 172 acres to 157 acres.

The census also shows the average age of farmers increased by two years to 58.

The census was conducted last year and covers a five-year period.
