A 22-year-old West Virginia man has accepted an Alford plea in connection with a fatal accident in Howard County, Maryland.

Under the plea, Joel Wareham of Martinsburg did not admit guilt but conceded the state had sufficient evidence for a conviction.

Wareham was charged with negligent homicide while impaired in the accident August 14 in Lisbon that killed 64-year-old Milton Bowens Sr. and injured Wareham and four other people.

According to police, Wareham's car crossed the double yellow line on Frederick Road and struck a 2001 Ford Explorer head-on.

Prosecutors are seeking an 18-month sentence. Wareham is scheduled to be sentenced April 16.
