An inmate at a federal prison in West Virginia will spend another two years behind bars for a coal rights leasing scam.
U.S. Attorney Sharon L. Potter said Friday that 50-year-old Randall Scott Michael was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley. Keeley also ordered Michael to pay $26,250 in restitution.
Michael pleaded guilty in August to one count of mail fraud.
Potter says the inmate at the minimum-security prison in Morgantown falsely represented himself as a wealthy executive. He claimed he would use money and proceeds from a trust to buy about 13 acres for $3.9 million.
Potter says Michael told a potential investor a refundable bond was required. Michael had a $26,250 check addressed to a false bonding company cashed and the proceeds were distributed to his family.
