West Virginia and Marshall universities are combining efforts to help cities find new uses for abandoned or vacant industrial sites.

The Marshall-WVU Foundation for Overcoming Challenges and Utilizing Strengths, or FOCUS, will provide grants of up to $5,000 to cities to redevelop such sites, known as brownfields.

The program is a partnership between the Northern West Virginia Brownfields Assistance Center at WVU and the Brownfields Assistance Center at Marshall.

Patrick Kirby with WVU's center says the program will give communities a starting point to turn eyesores into assets.
