A Charleston Area Medical Center security guard arrested on a drug-related charge had a criminal record. That has prompted CAMC to review its hiring practices.

According to court records, 27-year-old Billy Steven Casto of Sissonville had been charged five times since 2001: three times in Kanawha County with forgery and writing bad checks, once in Putnam County with domestic battery, and once in Ohio with stealing checks.

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department arrested Casto earlier this week on charges of trying to obtain Lortab, a prescription painkiller, with a forged prescription.

It was the second time in two years that a CAMC employee with a criminal record was arrested.

CAMC officials say background checks on prospective employees are performed regularly. But hospital spokesman Dale Witte says CAMC is reviewing its policies and practices to determine whether additional measures should be taken.
