To dig out of debt, Weston is slashing its Fire Department from four jobs to one. By July, only the chief will be salaried.
Mayor Julia Spelsberg says she's confident volunteers can handle the job, and cutting salaries means more money and equipment for them.
But retiring Chief Mike Young calls it dangerous. He says the city won't save a projected $200,000 because firefighters' salaries and benefits total just $120,000.
Weston has been in financial trouble since 2008.
Spelsberg says the city will be current on state taxes in July, then divert that $4,000 a month payment to the Internal Revenue Service.
At $6,000 a month, the IRS will be repaid in 2 1/2 years.
Weston also owes the Public Employees Insurance Agency at least $325,796.
