Some WV Residents Felt Canadian Earthquake

Occupants of five tall buildings in downtown Wheeling felt tremors from a magnitude-5.0 earthquake that struck Canada's Ontario-Quebec border.

Wheeling Fire Chief Larry Helms said only the taller, seven- to ten-story buildings reported the shaking. Five called the city's 911 center, and two briefly evacuated.

The quake was reportedly felt as far away as Michigan and New York.

Helms says the shaking lasted only a few seconds, and all the buildings are again occupied.

Lou Vargo of the Wheeling-Ohio County Emergency Management Agency says there doesn't appear to be any reason for concern about
structural safety.

The Monongalia County Office of Emergency Management says similar reports came in from around the Morgantown area.
