WV DEP Orders Mine to Clean Up Sediment Pond Spill

The operator of a Harrison County coal mine has been ordered to halt operations until it cleans up a spill from a sediment pond.

The state Department of Environmental Protection issued an imminent harm cessation order Monday at Coal Valley's Williams No. 2 mine near Enterprise.

The DEP says the spill was reported around 9 a.m. Division of Mining and Reclamation inspectors found no evidence of a fish kill as a result of the spill, which traveled into Bingamon Creek and the West Fork River.

The cause of the spill remains undetermined.

The order requires the company to stop all activity, evaluate the conditions that caused the spill and make plans to correct the problem.
