Interest in Curing Cancer Draws 14 Year Old to RMH Volunteering

By Nichole Jessie, 16, Junior Volunteer at RMH

For the last year and a half, I’ve worked as a junior volunteer at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. This job supplies me with skills I will need for the rest of my life, like communication and customer service skills, and has been very rewarding.

I volunteer in the RMH Gift & Floral shop. Family members of patients come to buy gifts, and RMH staff members also come in for a break to browse or buy candy and gifts. Knowing that I can provide them with a small service to make others happy brightens my day. I work for two hours, twice a month. It’s not a huge commitment, but I get to meet some really outstanding people and I always leave feeling better about myself because I gave back to my community. Everyone should take time out of their busy schedule to do things for others.

I would like to study cancer research at a good college, apply to a medical school and find the cure for any type of cancer. My mom, who is an RMH staff member, encouraged me to become a volunteer to understand what it means to help other people. It’s amazing how giving someone a smile can make them feel better and brighten their day.

“There are many opportunities for young people to volunteer at RMH,” says Chris Delaughter, director of RMH Volunteer Services. Junior Volunteer Partners are as young as 12, and volunteer with their parent, guardian, adult family member or friend. Junior Volunteers can serve on their own at age 14.

There are many high school and college-aged students volunteering at RMH. Formore information about the program, call 540-689-6400 or email rmhvol@rhcc.com
