Pepsi-Cola Student Athlete of the Week: Hannah Koontz
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Hannah Koontz is a volleyball, basketball and softball player at Pendleton County High School.
“I love them a lot,” Koontz said. “They are basically all of my free time. I have none because all I do is play sports.”
Specifically in volleyball, she is the all-PVC co-player of the year.
Participating in those three sports at a high level, to go along with her dedication as a student taking honors classes and being her school’s salutatorian shows a lot about who Hannah is.
“That’s no joke,” Joe Vincell, an English teacher at Pendleton County High School, said. “That takes an extreme amount of commitment to all four of those different things. A lot of hard work. That just says tons about her character and work ethic.”
Hannah’s successes as a student athlete have made her become a celebrity in the Pendleton County community.
“I would go out to eat at a restaurant here and they’d be like ‘oh hey,’” she said. “I didn’t know who they were but then I realized they were watching me through sports and it’s created a relationship where now I talk to them all the time and have that relationship with them.”
Just as much as Koontz has made an impact on them, the community has done the same with her.
“They’ve helped me along the way throughout the years and encouraged me to do my best.”
And that’s exactly what she does, her best, in all that she’s a part of setting her up for a bright next chapter. Hannah begins school at West Virginia University next fall.
“She has clearly learned that lesson, when I go hard at whatever it is I’m doing, I’m going to be successful,” Vincell said. “She’s a talented person that couples that with an incredible work ethic and that really can’t fail.”
Hannah plans on receiving a degree in the medical field, while studying in the honors college at WVU.
