ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - After approval from town council earlier this week, the Town of Broadway will move forward with the purchase of a historic building with plans to turn it into a multi-use theater. The property is located at 131 S. Main St.

Town Manager Kyle O’Brien said this historic building was part of the original Broadway High School, but new plans are on the horizon. With the council’s approval, he said the town will move forward in purchasing the property for $330,000.

O’Brien said the town wanted to preserve the building, determine how to best use the space, and provide a permanent space for the Schultz Theatre Off Broadway Players.

“It looks like we’re going to close on the building probably in July and hope to go to bid for construction in mid to late summer,” O’Brien said. “Our hope is to move forward with it quickly.”

According to O’Brien, the multi-use theater will be used for the Schultz Theatre Off Broadway Players performances, additional plays, concerts, and wedding receptions.

“It’s just going to be a really good space and the other great thing about it -- It’s right on Main Street,” O’Brien said. “It’s going to be right in the center of town, so it’s really going to be a focal point and centerpiece right in downtown Broadway, so it’s exciting.”

O’Brien said you probably won’t see performances at the multi-use theater until late 2022. He said the Oliver Art House will remain in the building.
