HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - The James Madison softball team defeated No. 5 seed Oklahoma State, 2-1, Friday night in a winner’s bracket game at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

JMU hung on for a victory after the Cowgirls threatened to tie the game or take the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Oklahoma State had runners at second and third with one out when the Cowgirls attempted a squeeze bunt but Odicci Alexander fielded the bunt and lunged to tag the runner out in an incredible display of athleticism by the JMU pitcher. Alexander got the next batter the fly out to end the game and secure a victory for the Dukes.

JMU scored first in the bottom of the first when Madison Naujokas singled to the pitcher and the ensuing throw to first was off the mark allowing Odicci Alexander to score. The Dukes added to their lead in the bottom of the third when Kate Gordon blasted a solo home run to left field, her second homer of the WCWS.

James Madison becomes the first unseeded team to begin the Women’s College World Series 2-0. The Dukes earn a day off on Saturday and will play again on Sunday against an opponent to be decided. With a win Sunday, JMU will advance to the WCWS Championship Series.
