AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - The CDC relaxed mask guidance, saying in areas of low or medium COVID-19 transmission, it’s safe to go without a mask.

Due to widespread immunity through vaccination and prior infection and better access to testing and treatment, federal officials say COVID’s spread has slowed. Dr. Costi Sifri with UVA Health said COVID rates are going down.

“In the near term, we can and are expecting to see a continued diminution of cases going forward, and I think that’s likely to occur not only a couple weeks but perhaps and hopefully a couple months,” said Sifri.

However, he said it’s important to remember the situation could change in the future.

“We remain hopeful, of course, but we need to understand that the virus has changed and has caught us surprised many times along the course of the pandemic,” he said.

The CDC now has a tool so you can look up your locality and see if the spread is low, medium or high. Most of the Valley remains in high levels of transmission. In Rockingham County, the CDC says it’s safe to go out without a mask if you’re comfortable.
