HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Kenny Brooks and the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team is preparing to compete in the NCAA Tournament.
Brooks, a Waynesboro native and the former James Madison head coach, has led the Hokies back to the NCAA Tournament for a second consecutive season. Virginia Tech went 23-9 during the regular season and earned a No. 5 seed. The Hokies will take on No. 12 seed, Florida Gulf Coast, in the first round Friday afternoon. The Eagles are a double-digit seed despite being ranked No. 23 nationally in the latest AP Poll.
“For me personally, this is like deja vu on the other side for me,” said Brooks of the matchup with FGCU. “I think in 2014, when I was at James Madison, we were an 11-seed. We got hooked up against Gonzaga who was a 6-seed. We felt slighted so we we went in with a chip on our shoulder. So fast forward a few years, we understand who our opponent is.”
Brooks and JMU defeated Gonzaga, 72-63, in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament before falling to Texas A&M in the second round.
Virginia Tech and FGCU are scheduled to play at 2:30 p.m. Friday in College Park, Maryland with TV coverage on ESPNU.
